SOU prepared me for a career as a biologist by teaching me the value of field observation, endless curiosity, and sincere regard for the natural world.  I am forever grateful for my experience at SOU!

Kate’s Story:

Kate discovered her love for marine biology on a scuba diving trip.  After attending college for a year in Florida, she missed the mountains and moved back to the Northwest.  While looking for a new school, she moved to Ashland with a friend. She soon found SOU and it was a great fit.  She frequently reminisces over her many biology field trips.  One in particular, with a van full of her fellow biology students, stands out in her mind.  It was a camping trip to southeast Oregon for Herpetology with Dr. Michael Parker.  She distinctly remembers his vast knowledge of desert ecology and his infectious enthusiasm.

Kate was hired into the US Forest Service’s Student Career Enhancement Program (SCEP) in 2004.  This earned her a spot for two summers working as a Fisheries Biology Technician while she was attending SOU, and led to her being hired where she is currently working – Willamette National Forest.  She passionately and actively manages public lands in ways that protect and enhance aquatic ecosystems.
