Nominees must be degree holders

Distinguished Alumni Award – this is the highest distinction that the University can bestow upon an alumnus. This award represents personal and professional achievement for the individual and reflects the education and experiences the alumnus had at SOU that helped shape their career. It is presented to alumni who have gained distinction in their chosen field or profession and who have brought extraordinary credit to the University and/or significant benefit to humankind. Only one award may be presented annually. Chosen by alumni board selection committee. 

Alumni Excellence in Education Award – this award recognizes an alumnus who has distinguished themselves in the realm of teaching at the primary, secondary or collegiate level. The awardee has a proven record of selflessness and devotion to students and is recognized by students, peers and related professionals, as being at the top of their profession. Chosen by alumni board selection committee.

The Stan Smith Alumni Service Award – this award recognizes an alumnus for their commitment to their community and service to people. There are many alumni who have dedicated their careers to serve others. This award acknowledges their work and helps to raise the profile of their community, regional and national service and leadership. Chosen by alumni board selection committee. 

The Young Alumni Award – this award recognizes a recent alumnus who is at the beginning of a career and is doing great work in their business and personal endeavors. The Young Alumni Award for notable early career achievement is presented to a recent alumnus who has demonstrated distinction in career, civic involvement or both. Nominees will have to meet the additional criteria of having completed their degree preferably in the last decade 10 years and no longer than 15 years. Chosen by alumni board selection committee.
