“I chose SOU because it was close to home, affordable, and made the transferring process from RCC very simple. Potlucks and ukulele lessons with the teaching cohort and Dr. Greene were amongst my best times at SOU.”
Brittany has always been an adventurous person. She proved this by accepting an offer to teach 11 Siberian-Yupik kindergarteners in the Bering Strait School District after graduating from SOU. She audaciously packed up her belongings, left her dog, family and friends behind to start a new chapter in her life. One of the first culture shocks she experienced in Alaska was when the ocean froze completely over the month after she arrived. Brittany completed two years in Savoonga and was the assistant volleyball coach and led the first grade Battle of the Books.
While Brittany was thousands of miles away from home, she continued to keep in contact with her teaching cohort and is currently taking courses through SOU for her reading endorsement. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys ice fishing (while keeping a watchful eye for polar bears), traveling, hunting, reading and taking part in an eskimo dance called “Atuq.” She recently accepted a position with the Phoenix-Talent School District and will join the staff as an elementary teacher.
