Joan’s Story

The small class sizes and the good reputation of SOU’s School of Business were just a few of the reasons that attracted Joan to SOU. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Joan sold investments for six years. She also was a policy examiner and marketing representative for a title company before she became a teacher at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, OR.

Joan came back to her roots here at SOU in 1997 with the goal of implementing a program for working adults to return to college and finish their degree. She has been teaching in the School of Business ever since and now serves as the School of Business’ Department Chair. In addition to the degree completion program, Joan also developed and launched a new degree program, the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Management.  The BAS allows individuals who have earned an associate’s degree in a technical field to complete a bachelor’s degree.  Additionally, Joan has also served as the director for the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center in Medford and the Interim Dean for the School of Business.

Three of Joan’s children have graduated from SOU and one is a current student.  Joan lives with her husband in Shady Cove and enjoys bass fishing, running, and playing with her grandchildren.
